A Study of the Correlation between Depression and Coping of the Cancer Patient

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore correlation between depression and coping of the cancer patient. The subjects for this study were 68 cancer patients, hospitalized at one University Hospital in Daejon. The survey instruments used in the study were Zung¢¥s Self-rating Depression Scale and Folkman and Lazarus Coping Inventory modified by Oh and Han. The survey was conducted from May 29th, 1992 to Februa-y 28th, 1993. The survey results were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and can be summarized as follows:
1. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of cancer patients¢¥ depression according to their demographic characteristics such as condition of disease (F= 4.9889, P <.01).
2. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of cancer patients¢¥ coping according to their demographic characteristics: sex (t= 5.6040, P < .05), condition of disease (F= 3.2958; P <.01), legions of cancer (F= 4.9776, P <.001).
3. There was negative correlation between depression and coping of cancer patients (?= -.2317, P <.05).
